Well,  I don't know if I'll ever be a SAHM(sniff sniff) because life just doesn't work that way for me apparently.  I think it's because God wants me to stay employed because I'm the best pharmacy tech in all the land (HAHAHAHAHA).....um, no.  Anyway, we bought a new computer because Mark thought our other one was fried so we shell out over $1000 on a new one because it has to be powerful enough for gaming.  Not a requirement for me, but whatever, what do I know about computers?  Precious little, that's what!  So Mark sets it up on his day off and decides to try out the old computer just to see if it was the CPU and not something else.  It ended up being something else.  Apparently the monitor and the keyboard decided to die together(awww how sweet).  So there's a $1000 mistake for you!  Now we have a computer for Garrett to beat up on.  Speaking of Garrett and computers(going off on a tangent for a bit here)...Mark happened to be looking on my profile on my laptop for something and noticed in the history that Garrett was searching for "viginas".  He figured that it was Garrett because of the misspelling--like I would look that up!  Seriously?  Anyway, I had to change the passwords on both computer profiles, set up Garrett's own profile and add on parental restrictions.  Everyone says to have a computer in a common setting of the house, which I do.  He only plays on the laptop when I'm around to supervise.  Seems to me I wasn't doing enough snooping over his shoulder to see what he was looking up!   OK, back to the subject...another money sucker right now...Mark's $1300 car repair bill! And this is just preventive stuff, folks.  The ol' Mazda needs new brakes, 2 new tires, an oil change and coolant flush.  I'm thinking I may want to go to mechanic school.  Those guys can rake in some bucks!

Just a Rant so I Can Get it All Out

As I have already stated in my last post, I really want to be a SAHM.  However, right now that's not feasible so work I must.  That being said, I really like my job.  Otherwise I wouldn't have been there as long as I have!  I have been a pharmacy technician for over 9 years and most days the job is rewarding.  Other days, not so much.  One can only take so much getting yelled at by other people.  My personal fave these days is when I get yelled at because their doctor did not call in their prescription, even though we have already requested a new prescription 3 TIMES!!!  I mean, seriously, is there a reason why people can't do things themselves?  I know this is part of my job and everything, but getting yelled at because a doctors office didn't call us back in a timely matter is very uncool.  One of my sisters is in the same line of work and we have discussed this issue before. I quote her when I say this:  "It's bad enough that we have to hand them the Charmin, but do we have to wipe their butts for them too?"

I Want to Be a SAHM

I never thought I'd say this, but my current dream is to be a SAHM.  I was just thinking the other day "Kel, what is your next goal?"  My whole life I've had these huge personal goals and once one has been met, I'd move on to the next one.  So here's my checklist and when they were accomplished:
  1. Graduate from college.  Goal reached 12/95.
  2. Land a job which uses my degree.  Goal reached 5/96.
  3. Meet my Knight in Shining Armour.  Goal reached 6/97. (In the form of Mark)
  4. Marry said knight. Goal reached 7/98.
  5. Have a baby.  1st part of goal reached 3/14/00 (Garrett)
  6. Buy a house.  Goal reached 12/04.
  7. Have another baby.  Goal reached 12/22/08.
That's my list.  I was kinda bummed the other day because I was thinking, what do I have to look forward to now?  My kids getting out of the house?  That's going to take forever!  I need something a little more short term.  The wheels in my head started turning and I said "Aha!  I could be a SAHM!"  I figure the easiest and quickest way to do this is to win Powerball.  Seeing how that is very highly unlikely, I have to have a plan B.  My plan will probably start out as a goal to shorten my hours at work from 40 to 30.  That way I can still stay "full time" and keep my insurance (Mark's insurance @his work is not nearly as good as mine.) I also have to get everyone in the house on board with the belt tightening.  I can't do it all myself after all.  This plan will probably take a few years since we have a bit of debt to work down.  Realistically, I'm hoping to have this accomplished by the time Lucas is in school.   I'll post about this from time to time to report how it's going!

I am a Lazy Blogger

Dang, I haven't written a post in a while! I think it's mostly because I can't load pics from my desktop because my computer is wonky and I don't have any pics loaded on the laptop yet...so I'm writing yet another pic-less post(Is that even a word? Well it is now!) Anyhoo, we've been having a fabulous fall here at the P household. We went apple picking and pumpkin picking...2 of which I picked at Walmart since the pickings in the patch were very slim. They had this thing called "Apple Slingshot" which was very cool, even though I truly sucked at it, much like I suck at anything remotely sports-related. Garrett was very good at it. Instead of aiming at the targets he was aiming for the trees. An apple makes a cool sound when it splats against a tree. I figured, hey, if Garrett has an easy time with this, how hard can it be? Well let me tell you--it's not as easy as it looks and I should know better than to underestimate my child. I took the apple, put it in the slingshot pocket, pulled back as far as I could, and the stupid apple fell out and whacked my foot. It hit really really hard and hurt. It hurt a lot. In fact, it hurt so much that I yelled out "Motherf!" Lest you all think I'm a pottymouth(.....) I had my censor on since there were children around and didn't finish the word.

Lucas is finally crawling and has gotten very good at it in a matter of days. He even figured out how to crawl on the landing to the stairs. I have a gate in the basement from the baby Garrett days and it will need to make an appearance soon. I don't like my basement and try to get down there as little as possible. Not that it's gross or anything, but it's the man-cave. I can't go down there without going into something airplane-related. I'm always afraid I'm going to break something because I'm a bit of a bull-in-a-chinashop type of gal. Really I'm a big klutz.

Lucas has also figured out how to shake his head "no". It's so cute. He does it mostly in his highchair when I'm feeding him. If I try to give him a bite of food and he's not ready for it yet he'll start the head shaking. It's quite helpful, really. Although sometimes he does it so enthusiastically I'm afraid he's going to go bald on the back of his head!

I had a totally genius idea the other day! Since I have no clue what's cool in toys this season I told Garrett it would really help out Santa and also Pepe and Meme if he would put some ideas on my Amazon wish list. He got so excited and said "Legos! I want all Legos!" so I said "Well go ahead and put what you want on the list." So later on that evening I went on the wish list so I could put Garrett's name in the comments and I saw some of the things he put on there....$400 and $600 lego sets!!! Whoa, this kid is pipe dreaming! I also noticed this morning that he made a list of what he "really wants" taped onto the computer desk. I'm really loving the not-so-subtle hints.

I saw this little rocking horse the other day that I just have to get for Lucas! Can't you just picture that in front of the Christmas tree? Classic!

Sometimes I Make Myself Chuckle

I was driving home from my sister's house today and decided to take the back way--back roads with lots of farms and not a lot of traffic are my preference. Anyway, I saw some haybales and shouted out "Hay!" which sounds like "Hey!"I love doing that, especially when there are others in the car with me. Garrett always laughs because he's in on the joke. Once every few months I get Mark with it though and it makes me laugh and laugh and laugh because I'll shout it out and he goes "What? What's wrong?" Then I'll start laughing. He doesn't find it as humorous as I do which makes it all the more funny for me!

Hmmm....

Not much new in the P household except Lucas found his voice again and likes to yell. A lot. Not that he's mad, he just likes to yell.

Anyway, for the "hmmmm...." part: I was at work yesterday getting ready to get the info off of the calendar to do next week's tech schedule(days off, appts, etc). I was crossing off the days so people would know that day was closed to new requests and I crossed off...Thurs 9/31. I'm thinking "Hey, I thought Saturday was 10/3. What's up with that???" Um, yeah. The smarties at the company who made the calendar made a bit of a goof. But hey, if anyone needs their house cleaned from top to bottom for free then I'm available on 9/31!

Hey Baby

If you check out my sidebar you'll see a new widget for "Hey Baby". Why is it there, you ask? Well the answer is...it's Lucas' favorite song! Some moms sing lullabyes to their babies. I sing Gwen Stefani. I don't know why, but every time I start singing that to him he gets all excited and starts kicking his legs and giggles. It can bring him out of any sour mood. Hey, I'll do whatever works. I remember Garrett's song of choice was rather unorthodox as well. He chilled out to the Pepsi Cola song(remember those commercials back around '00 or '01 with the little curly-haired girl dancing and lip-synching? That one.)

Coffee Mix

A lot of the blogs I follow are sites that contain recipes so once in a while I think I'll throw one of mine in there. this one isn't my original recipe. I found it on the net somewhere and I forget where since I emailed it to myself so I could print it out. Anyway, if you like hot coffee beverages at home but hate paying 4 bucks for a teeny can, this recipe is for you.

Swiss Mocha Coffee Mix

1 c instant coffee
1 c granulated sugar
2 c nonfat dry milk
4 tsp cocoa powder
For Sugar Twin, use 10 tsp for 1 cup of sugar.
* You can also use decaffeinated coffee.

Put all ingredients into a blender or food processor(I used my hand blender); blend until powder consistency. Put mixture into a glass jar with a lid.

The jar I used was a repurposed 26 oz spaghetti sauce jar. It fits perfectly into one of those.

My sister watched my boys for me on Sunday so I could work and when I picked them up the empty jar from the last batch that I made for her was in Lucas' diaper bag. I called her on her subtle hint and I mixed up a batch for her today and it took me maybe 5 minutes, if that. I didn't calculate the cost but it's a lot cheaper than buying it! Suzy won't take $ for watching the boys(we have been each other's free babysitter for several years) but she will take gifts. So she's getting that and a candle I picked up for free with a coupon. Lest you think I'm cheap, I gave her full disclosure! I may be frugal but I'm not cheap!

Welcome Ladytoesocks!

I've lured my sister to the darkside. Bwahahahaha! She is now a proud blog owner. Of course, her life isn't the open book that mine is so she set her blog to private. She sent me an invitation to it so when it showed up in my email it said "You have an invitation from Ladytoesocks..." so I thought it was from a store that sells socks ttherefore I didn't open it right away but I thought "Wow C would like that place. She loves toesocks!" so to me that was kinda funny. Anyway, welcome!

I'm writing this post from my boudoir on my new laptop!! Woohoo!! Mr. P has been talking for a while about getting me one since my blogging and facebooking has been cramping his WoW style. So a couple of nights ago during one of my middle of the night 'net shopping trips (hey, had to replace the midnight snacking with something!) I was pricing netbooks at Ye Olde Bestbuy and discovered that laptops weren't that much more than netbooks so into the virtual shopping cart it went. I saved it until the next morning for Mark to look at to make sure it wasn't junk and now here we are! I'm going to add a random picture of something just because I can!

Ah, the Joys of Boys

A little over a year ago, when I found out that my little peanut inside of my was going to be a boy, I cried because I really wanted a girl but I quickly got over it and then I thought, "Hey, I got a pass on all that annoying girl stuff! Woo hoo!" But yesterday I went to CVS with the boys in tow to pick up some stuff that was on sale. One of those items happened to be Kotex pantiliners. I figured that I'd just pick them up, throw them in my cart, and be on my way to the next aisle. Nope, that didn't happen. So here's the convo that we had:

Garrett: What are those?
Kelly: Those are pantiliners.
G: But what are they for?
K: They're just things that girls use.
G: Yeah, but what are they for?
(at this point I'm desperately trying to think of something that will sufficiently answer his question while at the same time avoiding a whole topic about female menstruation)
K: Garrett, just be thankful that you're a boy and you'll never have to care what they're for.
G: Yeah, BUT WHAT ARE THEY FOR???
K: Garrett, you put them in your underwear.
G: (giggling)

This just goes to show that just because you have boys doesn't necessarily mean you're off the hook on the feminine products discussion.

Totally off topic, but I just found out from Edmunds.com that my car is the most frugal to own. Woo hoo!

Things I've Learned About Solids

Okay, Lucas and I have a budding relationship with the solids thing. We're both learning what we both like/don't like. I am also learning that this is yet another arena where he differs from his older brother. For the most part, Lucas likes pretty much everything you give him. Also, when he likes something, he's a member of the clean plate club. So here's what I've learned, in random order.

  1. Lucas has texture issues. Green veggies, for example. I've tried pureeing green beans and peas(not together) but those 2 are pretty darn hard to puree smoothly if you can get them smooth at all. The jarred stuff, however, he will eat. Bananas--same thing. Pureed all the way, no chunks please!
  2. Yogurt gets a big thumbs up! When all else fails, yogurt.
  3. Unsweetened applesauce works great with those hard-to-puree green veggies. Is it the smoothness? The sweetness? I don't know. But it works.
  4. Pureed fruit+oatmeal=great breakfast.
  5. Canned fruits(w/juice, not that heavy syrup stuff, watch your labels) pureed with a little of the juice is superfast, tastes a lot like the jarred stuff, and is much cheaper!
  6. Cheerios and those new Big Rice Krispies are the perfect baby snack or appetizer! Just throw a few on the highchair tray and you've bought yourself some time.( to make dinner, have a cup of coffee, whatever)
  7. Do not eat in front of Lucas unless you're prepared to share. Otherwise, see #6.

New gdiaper Convert...Hopefully

I've been holding out for a while on buying gdiapers because I just couldn't justify the cost of them due to the fact that I can get sposies cheaper than I can get the gdiaper inserts. But then I thought "But what about the cost to the environment?" Well, tonight I caved and placed an order for the starter kit and case of inserts. Green guilt got me. Now I'm checking all over the place looking for the cloth inserts. I'm going to get addicted, I know. I also know that I will never ever ever get Mark on board with this. We're obviously not going to be able to totally switch, but I want to at least try it out on weekends or when we're at home. Even when we're doing it this way it's less trash that we're contributing. I checked out the gdiapers website and they offer a cloth insert option but alas, the size I need is out of stock until the end of the month. So if anyone has any gdiaper tips, likes, dislikes, whatever--please share!

blah. I'm melting.

I was going to write a post about Lucas and his cheerios and stuff but it's just too stinking hot to blog. So, is this heat turning anyone else's babies into crankasses? Remind me of this heat when I'm complaining about paying through the nose for heating oil this winter!

Grab A Pen And Some Paper...

...and write this down: Kelly Poulin missed a day of work.
Man, this bum leg really blows! I NEVER miss work. I have to be hacking up a lung before I will call out. I haven't missed a day of work due to illness/injury in over 3 years. I thought I would be OK and would be able to just hang out at prescription drop-off all day(since that spot requires the least bending) but since my job is not a sit-down one I discovered that standing on this leg that I can't bend just isn't going to work. I went in to work for an hour and the other tech told me to go home. So I'm typing here with my leg propped up on the exersaucer hoping that it gets better by tomorrow. Now I'm having mom-guilt because I feel I should have picked up the boys first. I called Dawn--my SIL who watches my boys during the day-- and she told me to leave them with her and pick them up later. She's the best.

What's the Lesson Here?

I believe that every event in life, good or bad, teaches a lesson whether you choose to see it that way or not. I learned a good one last night. After I got out of work I took a pretty nasty tumble in the parking lot on the way to my car. My foot caught in a pothole of sorts and I went flying. It was a kind of weird, slow-motion thing. This is what went through my head in a matter of seconds" "Oh my gosh, I'm FALLING!!!! Oh wait, no I'm not...Oh wait, yes I am!! Now how to stop this.." so I went with instinct and put my hands out to break my fall. So I was flat on the ground for about 1/2 a minute trying to figure out what the hell just happened and what my next step should be(Oh, by the way, thanks to the person sitting in the car who saw the whole thing but didn't get out to see if I was ok. Yes, I'm being sarcastic.) I decided I would just go home. So, I assessed the damage when I got home: scraped right hand, ripped pants to shreds on left knee, scraped skin on left knee(but no blood thank goodness). Okay, no swelling, only 1 big bruise, so why does my leg hurt like hell? As of now I can barely bend it without screaming in pain. Sure makes life interesting when your bathroom is upstairs. So anyway to the lesson part: Shave your legs daily. Why is this the lesson? Because I hadn't in a couple of days. Seems that we can no longer wear capris at work and I have to lead by example therefore I've been wearing long pants every day. Apparently I can wear a skirt that leaves my underwear color no longer a mystery when I bend over or makes it look like I'm wearing nothing underneath my lab coat but shorter pants are a no-no. But I digress. So I skipped a couple of days to save some time in the morning. Shaving today was painful to say the least.

Vaca Recap

Well, we had a pretty decent vacation overall. The weather was fabulous for the first time this summer and we got some things done. We didn't end up going anywhere(and I'm NOT using the word "staycation" since I hate it). So nice, so relaxing. We were able to go to a Bean shindig which is always nice in of itself. This one, however, was extra special. It turns out that my grandfather has a half-sister who he just met this summer. She's 96, grampa is 86. This fete was about our families getting together and meeting. She looks fabulous! I hope I look that good at 96! Anyway, it was just so touching to see. Grampa didn't stop smiling all day! And I discovered that not only does my dad have a cousin who is named Bob, like him, but they both have daughters named Kelly! I pointed that out to Bob who said"You know, there just aren't enough names." We stimulated the economy(ie, spent a boatload of money on shopping and whatnot), had a beachday(where I stupidly got burned) and we cleaned the house. Exciting times in the Poulin house! Oh, we also had Poulins over to our house for lobster on our last vaca day. You know, my friend Erica from work was telling me the other day that the per-pound price of lobsters is currently less than the per-pound price of hotdogs. Crazy, huh! I'll take a red lobster over a red dog any day! The hot dogs, however, are much less of a pain in the ass to deal with, cooking and clean-up wise. Anyway, we had a good time together all week and that's what family vacation is all about!

One Lucky Mama

Sigh. I dare say I'm the luckiest mom on the planet. My 7-month old, Lucas, sleeps through the night, never cries, and is always happy. He also takes 2 hour naps. A lot of my FB and IVillage mom friends cannot say the same. That's why I don't often post on FB about my baby "STTN" or "not crying all day" or whatever. And food? He likes pretty much anything you put in front of him. Not to say that he doesn't have his favorites, but still! Otherwise I'd be posting all the time about him and it would come across as serious bragging. I feel badly for my fellow mamas when they have trying times. But for those who don't think I'm earning my infant mom badges, I'll let you know that I earned them around 9 years ago with Garrett! As an infant he was VERY trying to say the least. As a kid though, he's hard to beat. So for those mamas with trying babies, it does get better! Now I'm waiting for Lukey-loo to turn into a pumpkin.

Vacation, All I Ever Wanted....

Yes, yes, yes!!!! I am on vacation next week and I can't wait! I really need it! Why is it that the last week before vacation is the week where you swear you'll crack? It's really been hard for me to bite my tongue and not say what I want to say back to people but I held back and let me tell ya, it has not been easy! I have lots of fun things to do with the fam next week which includes Lucas' first trip to the beach! Sand, waves, and maybe a lighthouse will be part of the fun. A museum trip is thrown in there for a rainy day(if there is one; if not, I won't be upset!) There will also be a day to veg or to get some stuff done around the house. We have to put our house back together after all the stuff is done to it but I'll save that gripe for another post. This post is about fun!

Mark and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary last Sunday(I know! I've been with the same guy that long and haven't tired of him yet!) with a trip to The Olive Garden with boys in tow. It would have been nice to go by ourselves but it would have been a pain in the butt to find a sitter and we thought it would just be easier to bring them. It was kinda last minute anyway since I said "Hey, it's our anniversary, wanna go out?" so Garrett chimes in with "Yeah, let's go to Denny's!" Sure kid, I'm going to celebrate our love over pancakes. I SO do not think so! (now pancakes the next morning is another story...) Of course Lucas had to charm all the waitresses with his cute babyness.

At this time tomorrow I will be singing "Vacation" by the Go-Go's and doing the vacation dance. Yes, there is a dance. Mark made it up years ago. Maybe I'll post a video, who knows. Catch ya later!

My Dream Has Died...or at Least Been Put on Life Support

In a previous post I was gushing about my new dishwasher. Mark was going to get the guys working on the house to install it. Piece of cake, right? Wrong. Apparently they don't want to do it because it doesn't fit into their time table and while they didn't come out and say it, their doing so would be a colossal pain in the ass; therefore, not worth their time. I don't know a whole lot about construction or the installation of kitchen appliances but I was told it involves taking out the countertop. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense but whatever. Soooooo....since it is that involved, I've decided to get new countertops and a new sink! So it's not all bad, but I will have to wait longer than I expected. I have no idea of the costs involved to do so, so that's why we're waiting on it. No laminates, though. I'm not going cheap on this. I'm getting what I want this time. I'm getting Corian countertops with a recessed sink. Bummer that I'll have to get rid of the built-in glass cutting board with the zodiac underneath though.(hee hee)

Work in Progress

Well I finally figured out the picture thing on here...or actually, I found a way to backdoor the pictures on here. I tried with the image posting button on here but for some reason my computer freaks out when I try that. Then I remembered Photobucket. Yay for Photobucket! So here's our works in progress.

Home Again

Dang, these guys sure can get a lot done in a couple of days! My bedroom windows are installed, the subfloor in the kitchen is down, and the floor/ceiling/walls (the bad parts anyway) in the kitchen are replaced. Oh yeah, they put the new roof down too! I'm a few steps closer to getting my house as I knew it back. Oh, and did I mention the dishwasher? Just thinking about it makes me giddy. So back to the windows...those were done yesterday. I got home from work and child pick-upping so of course the first thing I do is go upstairs to check them out. Gone is the big-ass mirror that was between the 2 windows. Good riddance to that! Seeing myself in all my glory skeeves me out. (little sidebar--the previous-previous owner was a dance instructor so there are huge mirrors aplenty in this house). I proceed to open the windows. They crank open very nicely! Next I noticed that there are no screens! I gave Mark the "WTF" call at work and he said "relax woman, I'll take care of it!" Don't you love how he talks me down? Turns out they were missing so our contractor put in an order for them. Kelly is happy now!

Home Sweet Home

So, when we bought this house in December of 2004 we had a home inspection like all prospective homebuyers do and were informed that 1 of the roofs would need to be replaced sooner rather than later. Sooner came in March of 2006 when Mark saw a hole in the attic with sunlight poking through. Not cool! So...we(and when I say we I really mean Mark) called a few places, got an estimate, and got a new roof. What does this have to do with the price of tea in China, you ask? Well here's your answer: We have 2 roofs. There was an addition put on this house(I don't know when but the guy across the street knows 'cause he's been here forever) and it has a flat rubber roof. We(and again I mean Mark) have to shovel off the roof every time that there's a storm so it doesn't cave in. Living in Maine, this happens at least weekly. The roofing co. looked at the flat roof and said "Hey, it's in good shape." So we opted to have nothing done to it. Flash forward to January of 2009. We had been getting wonky winter weather...mostly ice and rain and sleet with some snow mixed in for fun. We had an ice storm where it snowed, then rained, then flash froze. You just can't shovel that off. Well guess what happened? Ice damage! Our roof then leaked and ruined the kitchen ceiling, the ceiling in the laundry room, the floors in those rooms and the ceiling in Garrett's room. Garrett said that it looked like the cat threw up upside down. He's a funny kid. But I digress. So we (Mark) called our insurance and thankfully it's covered. The contractor that we hired came over to take a piece of our flooring to test it so they could determine its value so we could get an allowance for new flooring. Turned out, the vinyl flooring that came over on the Mayflower had asbestos backing! So an abatement company came in to take it out. During that time we had to be out of the house for a few days(hey, mini vacation in my own hometown! We stayed at the Lewiston Ramada) All of our appliances(washer, dryer, fridge, freezer) are now in my computer room awaiting their placement on our new flooring. Our kitchen now looks like it's in a camp. I prefer to call it rustic. It feels like we just moved in because we can't find anything. I've definitely learned my lesson in hoarding. I now have to go to the(gasp) laundromat!! I haven't been to the laundromat in like 6 years! I had to buy a laundry card because I guess that's all the rage at laundromats now. What in the hell am I going to with the card once I'm done with it? Are they going to refund me the money that's on it? Hell no! Maybe I'll leave it there and someone can find it. I'll have to do the same thing with the laundry soap since my washer is HE and I also had to buy regular laundry detergent. One thing that is cool though...my new dishwasher will be installed soon! I'm practically crying tears of joy as I type this. Well enough for now. Catch ya later!

Baby Yuck

Ok, last night Lucas was having a really hard night. This kid cries, like, never. Well, he wouldn't stop crying, wouldn't eat, wouldn't take the binky and the only way he would stop was if I held him while standing upright and swaying with him. That gets tiring after a while so I sat on the couch, tried to give him his bottle and he pushed it away, started coughing then totally upchucked. In my hair. My bra. My mouth. Man was that nasty! I'd write more but Mark has to WoW it.

My First Blog Entry!

Hey, welcome to my blog! Not much to write about today as I'm just setting this up. And I have piles and piles of laundry to do. Will write again soon!
